@Kidsandliz@Superllama7
I lived in International Falls for several years. Coldest spot in the US way too frequently. Stretches of below zero weather (day and night) for 7 to 10 days in January every year.
Never wore mittens! Loved my thermalite/thinsulate gloves, and now electric gloves are a thing. Got to admit, I don’t get cold easily, and generally don’t have any trouble with circulation in my fingertips. Plus I don’t like having my fingers constricted in mittens.
@chienfou@Superllama7 I worked in NW Ontario one year. Outhouses and wood stoves for heat. No electricity. Temps could go down to 60 below F. minus 20 was considered a “usual” high temp. Went home at christmas and it was positively tropical 5 above (if I recall correctly - might have been 5 below), I had my jacket unzipped, hood off, while shoveling snow.
Of course after even snow belt winters when it was finally 50 out we’d run outside and play with no jacket. Then in the middle of the summer if it was 50 we’d be freezing with no jacket.
Gloves made of cotton. I used to take the brown cotton garden gloves, cut off the last two fingers, sew them up, and have 3 finger gloves for Sontaran Halloween costume.
Why isn’t there a glove 2/ mitten 3 option? Most likely, if you need finger dexterity, you’re leaning on that index. So glove thumb and index and mitten the rest.
I use both at the same time! Mittens over gloves! When you have a long walk to get to your destination in negative degree windy weather; having the double layer covering on your hands is a lifesaver. Easy to remove the mitten to have free fingers when needed. Worked outside on the shores of Lake Michigan for many years; learned how to manage weather conditions for health and safety.
Gloves when doing things like shoveling the snow. Mittens when skiing. I don’t need dexterity to grip a ski pole and mittens are absolutely warmer than gloves.
Garrote.
/showme a number of Real cats wearing Mittens & Gloves.
@mycya4me They do look adorable with those mitten socks.
@mediocrebot
/showme Cat mom scolding kitten for losing her mittens.
@mediocrebot Ok, sooooo, I guess cats have FOUR mittens, so two are missing, right?
One word: dexterity
Pockets
I picked mittens; gloves are fine but you guys don’t know what it’s like to live in the upper Midwest
@Superllama7 So true. Mittens are far warmer. I lived in the snow belt on Lake Erie growing up. Gloves just didn’t cut it when it was really cold.

@Kidsandliz
So, that begs the question… Gloves or mittens?
@chienfou MITTENS!!! Otherwise your fingers get too cold when it is cold enough out.
Gloves made of cotton. I used to take the brown cotton garden gloves, cut off the last two fingers, sew them up, and have 3 finger gloves for Sontaran Halloween costume.
Gloves.
Waste of time giving the finger with mittens on.

@brainmist That’s a good idea! Do you knit?
@Kyeh sadly, no.
Mittens are for kittens.
@chuckf1 very much agreed
I prefer gloves to mittens because I’m not 10 and under.
Mittens. My fingers like to be together.
Thinsulate gloves. If it gets colder, I use my electric handwarmer.(If it is still too cold, stay inside, I’m not Inuit)
Proctologists agree, gloves over mittens…. Unless…
@accelerator
And more importantly … so do their patients!
@accelerator @chienfou To quote Optimus Prime – the whole fist, doc?
Honestly it depends what you’re doing.
@user74860313 My sentiments also!
Gloves for my feet. Mittens for my hands.

These would be acceptable gloves

@pakopako
That’s just frostbite waiting to happen when it’s 40 below.
Fun fact. 40 below is the same in Fahrenheit and centigrade

@jkawaguchi
Great idea
If cats have kittens, then mice have mittens.
@iwilsker
What do sheep have?
@chienfou @iwilsker Wool
Convertible mittens.

Mittens are so much warmer, but gloves are necessities for existing in the cold and being functional.
